4 Commonly Asked Questions about In-Home Newborn Sessions
When is the best age for newborn sessions?
5 days to 3 weeks old is a great time to get your newborn in for a session. During this time, they’re still sleeping a TON, making it easier to get the best shots. This also gives you a few days at home to get settled and situated before your shoot.
What should my newborn wear?
Keep it simple. Afterall, the main focus of the photos is your baby, not their outfit. A few ideas for newborn photos are: A neutral onesie, a diaper cover, or a neutral swaddle. To take it up a notch, you can bring a hair bow or hat. But again, try to keep things simple and minimal. I would avoid shirt/pant combinations, as newborns are often too small for these and they just look like they’re swimming.
What should mom & dad wear?
Moms: Whatever you choose, make sure it’s something you’re comfortable in! When you’ve just had a baby, wearing tight clothing is the last thing you want to do. I would a recommend loose, flowy dress that you feel confident in. Try to avoid any bright colors, because the color can reflect onto your skin in photos.
Dads: Choose colors that compliment mom. If mom chose warm tones, dad should also choose warm tones. Avoid logos and patterns. When in doubt, keep it simple and minimal!
How do I prepare my home?
My biggest tip is to declutter! The focus should be on your newborn and your family, not pile of mail laying on your counter. In-home sessions typically take place in the nursery, mom and dad’s room, and the living room, so prioritize getting those rooms cleaned up.
Other small things to do: Make sure to open up all your curtains to allow as much natural light in as possible. Change out bedding if you wish to do so. Clean white bedding always looks great!
