5 Tips for a Beautiful and Stress-Free Maternity Photo Shoot
Capturing an incredible season of life
Maternity photos are more than just pictures; they're a celebration of this incredible season of life. As a Lake Country family photographer, I love capturing these intimate and joyful moments through lifestyle photography that feels natural and timeless. Whether it’s your first baby or your third, documenting your pregnancy is such a special way to honor the journey you’re on. And trust me, you will never regret having these memories to look back on.
I totally get it though, booking a maternity session can feel overwhelming. What should you wear? When should you schedule? Will you feel comfortable in front of the camera? If you’re feeling a little nervous, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered.
I recently had the absolute joy of capturing a maternity session at Nashotah Park in Delafield on a rare 40-degree January day in Wisconsin. (If you know Wisconsin winters, you know that’s practically tropical!) This session was extra special because it was this couple’s first baby — a sweet little girl! They booked my Bump to Baby package, which means I’ll also be photographing their newborn session soon. I can’t wait!
So, if you’re on the fence about booking a maternity session or just want some guidance to make the experience feel effortless, here are my five best tips for a beautiful and stress-free maternity shoot!
Tip #1: Choosing the Right Time for Your Session
Timing is everything when it comes to maternity photos! The best time to book your session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you’re still (hopefully!) feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session.
Waiting too long, especially past 36 weeks, can make it harder to move comfortably, and we definitely don’t want to risk baby making an early debut before your session!
If you’re considering a maternity session, my biggest piece of advice is to book early. That way, you’ll have your ideal date secured and can plan ahead stress-free!
Tip #2: What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
One of the biggest questions I get: What should I wear? The answer? Whatever makes you feel like the most beautiful version of yourself!
Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your outfit:
Flowy dresses: These are always a classic and flattering option. They highlight your bump while giving that dreamy, ethereal look.
Form-fitting styles: If you want to show off every curve, a fitted dress or bodysuit is a gorgeous option, just like this beautiful momma-to-be, Jenna.
Soft, neutral tones: Light pastels, earth tones, or classic whites/creams photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you.
Textures & layers: Lace, knits, or chiffon add interest and movement to your photos.
Avoid busy patterns: Simple and timeless is the goal!
Most importantly, wear something you feel confident in. If you feel amazing, it will absolutely show in your photos!
Tip #3: Preparing for Your Session
Feeling your best starts before you even step in front of the camera! A little preparation goes a long way in making sure you feel relaxed and glowing.
Here are a few easy ways to prep for your maternity session:
Treat yourself to some pampering: A fresh blowout or curled hair, natural makeup, or even some false lashes can give you that extra boost of confidence.
Hydrate & rest: Drink plenty of water the day before, and try to get a good night’s sleep so you feel refreshed.
Wear comfortable, well-fitting undergarments: Seamless options or maternity-friendly shapewear can help outfits look smooth and polished.
Bring along any special props: A sonogram, baby shoes, or a tiny onesie can be sweet touches to incorporate into your session.
Include your loved ones! If this isn’t your first baby, bring the older siblings along! Their excitement over their soon-to-be little sibling is something so special to capture. And don’t forget about the family pet—your furry friend is just as much a part of your growing family. Maternity photos aren’t just about your baby bump; they’re about celebrating this incredible chapter of life with the people (and pets!) who mean the most to you.
The most important thing? Show up feeling relaxed and excited! You deserve to feel celebrated in this moment.
Tip #4: Location Ideas for Your Maternity Photoshoot
Choosing the right location is key in setting the mood for your maternity photos. Do you want a cozy, intimate vibe? Or are you dreaming of a breathtaking outdoor backdrop?
Here are a few location ideas to consider:
Outdoor nature settings: Parks, open fields, and lakeshores offer stunning natural beauty and seasonal variety. (Nashotah Park, where we recently shot, was the perfect winter wonderland!) Luckily in Lake Country, we have no shortage of beautiful natural settings to choose from!
Studio sessions: If you love a more minimalist style, an indoor studio session in my Oconomowoc studio with soft lighting can create dreamy, timeless images.
Home sessions: There’s something so special about maternity photos taken in your own space; it feels personal and cozy, perfect for capturing this season of waiting and anticipation.
Think about what fits your personal style best! If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help find the perfect location.
Tip #5: What to Expect During Your Session
If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, I get it! But I promise, my job is to make this process fun, easy, and comfortable for you.
Here’s what you can expect when we work together:
We take things slow and easy: There’s no rush! I’ll guide you into natural, flattering poses so you never feel awkward.
Candid moments are encouraged: Some of the best photos happen in those in-between moments, where you’re laughing, walking, or interacting with your partner.
Handling older siblings & pets: If you’re bringing older kiddos or your beloved pet, don’t worry, I’ve got plenty of tricks up my sleeve to keep them engaged! Whether it’s turning picture time into a game for little ones or bringing treats or a toy to get your pup’s attention, I’ll make sure everyone feels included and we capture those sweet, candid moments naturally.
Breaks are totally okay: If you need a rest, no problem! This session is about you feeling your best.
Lots of encouragement! I’ll be your personal hype woman the entire time, making sure you feel as radiant as you truly are.
By the end of the session, you’ll walk away feeling confident and excited. And when you see your final images, you’ll be so glad you took the time to celebrate this moment.
Maternity Sessions Are an Investment in Memories
Pregnancy is such a short season in the grand scheme of things, but it’s one that deserves to be remembered. Your maternity photos will one day be something you look back on and cherish, not just for yourself, but for your little one, too.
If you’re thinking about booking a maternity session, consider my Bump to Baby package like the couple I recently photographed. Booking your maternity and newborn sessions together takes one more thing off your plate, plus you get a special discount on both sessions — a total win-win!
So, if you’re expecting and wondering if a maternity session is worth it, let me just say, it absolutely is. And I’d love to be the one to capture it for you.
