Cake Smash Session Tips & Tricks

One very popular inquiry that I get is about cake smash sessions. Celebrating your little one’s birthday is a big deal, and I love getting to capture it. When it comes these sessions though, I know what you’re thinking: β€œOne year olds are unpredictable. How is this going to work?” In all honesty, every kiddo is so different that there’s no one size fits all to making sure their cake smash will go smoothly. But, I do have some tips:

  1. Bring snacks: You know your kid best. Bring snacks that you know they like. Whoever said bribery doesn’t work was lying.

  2. Schedule: Make sure to avoid scheduling your session during nap time. We want to avoid fussiness and tears as much as possible!

  3. Try not to stress: This one is easier said than done. But try to avoid stressing and worrying about how your session is going to go. Go into it with excitement so that hopefully, your child will reciprocate that same energy.

  4. Be prepared to participate: One year olds don’t exactly understand what they’re supposed to do with a cake in front of them. You might need to help out and show them how to dig in.

  5. Bring an extra outfit: Every session is different, but they can get messy. Bring extra clothes to change your kiddo into after their session is done.
